久しぶりに「シャーロックホームズで学ぶ英文法」を読んだ．
前回読んだのが7/30なので，もう１ヶ月以上経ったけど，まぁ焦ることなく楽しみながら読んでいきます．
それで，今日勉強して「なるほど」と思った文は，
James Ryder, upper-attendant at the hotel, gave this evidence to the effect that he had shown Horner up to the dressing-room of the Countess of Morcar upon the day of the robbery in order that he might solder the second bar of the grate, which was loose.
ううむ・・・会話文とは思えないほど長い（苦笑）
英文自体は長いけど難しくない．
James Ryder (, upper-attendant at the hotel, ) gave this evidence to the effect that …
主語(S)はJames Ryder，動詞(V)はgave，目的語(O)がthis evidence それに修飾語(M)として to the effect that … となり，that 以下が複文となっている．
show someone up to … に注意
that以下をみると，
he had shown Horner up to the dressing-room of the Countess of Morcar
ここで，show someone up と捉えて「（誰々）に恥をかかせる」と解釈すると意味不明になる．
show someone to… で「（誰々）を…へ案内する」が原型で，toの前にupが入って副詞として修飾しているという解釈が妥当だ．
Weblioで調べると，upの6(a)の意味は「(特定の場所・話者のいる)ほうへ，近づいて」と記載があり，下記の例文がある．
- I went up to the teacher’s table. （先生の机のところまで行った）
- A stranger came up to me. （見知らぬ人が私のところへやってきた）
どちらも，元の文は I went to the teacher’s table. と A stranger came to me. であり，toの前にupを加えることで少しだけ味付けした意味になるのだろう．
同じように，ホームズの文も show someone to … が元で，これにupが入って，show someone up to … となったと解釈する．つまり，
he had shown Horner up to the dressing-room of the Countess of Morcar
の意味は，「彼はホーナーをモーカー伯爵夫人の化粧室まで案内した」となる．
この後は，upon the day of the robberyと続く．「強盗があったその日に」
さらにその後は，in order that he might solder the second bar of the grate, which was loose. 「ゆるんでいた鉄格子の二番目の柵を（彼が）はんだ付けするため」
that以下の文を再掲すると，
he had shown Horner up to the dressing-room of the Countess of Morcar upon the day of the robbery in order that he might solder the second bar of the grate, which was loose.
「彼は，ゆるんでいた鉄格子の二番目の柵をはんだ付けするため，強盗があったその日，ホーナーをモーカー伯爵夫人の化粧室まで案内した．」
to the effect that …
to the effect that …は「…という趣旨で」という意味．
effectは「効果」という意味が真っ先に思い浮かんだけど，「趣旨」という意味もあるらしい（Weblioで4番目の意味）
だけど，頭の中で慣れていないためか，なかなかピンとこない．そこで，類似の例文をいくつか集めてみることにした．
- The letter was to the effect that business prevented his coming.
その手紙は用があって来られないという文面であった - He made a phone call to the effect that he will come to the office soon.
彼はすぐにオフィスに来ることを伝えるという旨で電話をかけました - The company made a statement to the effect that no bonuses would be given this year.
その会社は、今年は特別賞与は出ないという旨の声明を出した
改めてホームズの英文を見ると，
James Ryder, upper-attendant at the hotel, gave this evidence to the effect that …
「ホテルの上級職員のジェームズ・ライダーは….という趣旨の証拠を示した．」という意味．
最終的な解釈
それでは，最後にこの長い英文の意味をまとめると，
James Ryder, upper-attendant at the hotel, gave this evidence to the effect that he had shown Horner up to the dressing-room of the Countess of Morcar upon the day of the robbery in order that he might solder the second bar of the grate, which was loose.
ホテルの上級職員のジェームズ・ライダーは，強盗があったその日，ゆるんでいた鉄格子の二番目の柵をはんだ付けするためホーナーをモーカー伯爵夫人の化粧室まで案内した，という趣旨の証拠を示した．
